Sports at FDIS are an integral part of the overall whole-school curriculum and education. Staying fit not only improves health, but also helps to improve brain function. According to research conducted by the Government of Western Australia's Department of Sport and Recreation, "physical activity enhances children's learning capabilities and leads to better performance."
At FDIS, students have the opportunity to join various sports teams. Currently, we have the following official FDIS Sports teams: basketball, soccer, badminton, track & field, swimming (ES only) and cross country. Student athletes have opportunities to play against schools from all around Shanghai and neighboring cities. Student athletes have a chance to play in several tournaments during the season, in addition to single match games.
FDIS is one of the founding member schools of two sports leagues here in Shanghai (the Shanghai Schools Sports Association & The Big 12 Sports Conference). This has provided our students with access to numerous sporting events, in addition to opportunities to cooperate with different international schools. FDIS also makes two annual trips to Nanjing for tournaments in soccer, basketball and badminton, which gives our student athletes chances to share their love of sports with other student athletes representing international schools in Guangzhou, Xiamen, Wuxi, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. The Big 12 Conference will be opening a Beijing chapter in the near future and our students will have a chance to also join tournaments in China's capital city.
During any of the various sports seasons, students participating in FDIS sports are required to practice three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) during ASA time (3:45 pm - 4:30 pm). IB students and students participating in either Model United Nations (MUN) or the Student Government Association (SGA) are authorized to practice twice a week. At any time, academics take precedence over all sports and ASAs; therefore, students needing to attend to their studies should do so accordingly. We encourage students to consider their academic schedule before committing to any of the sports teams. Additionally, student athletes who are on academic probation are unable to participate in any of the FDIS sports teams until they display a marked improvement, in accordance with school policy. In order for student athletes to rejoin an FDIS sports team after being placed on academic probation, they must obtain approval from their subject teachers, Dean of Academics, Dean of Students and Athletics Director.
We encourage all FDIS middle school students and FDIS high school students to join a team! We train hard, we play hard, and we do it with FDIS pride. We hope to see more students on the court or the field some time soon! Go Mustangs!
